Space Segment Guidance

In supply chain provenance, “identity” clarifies the definitive origin of each hardware component, software library, or firmware load embedded within a space vehicle. Adopting robust identity mechanisms—such as cryptographic identities, unique device serial numbers, or digital “fingerprints” of critical code—helps mission operators confirm that each piece of equipment and software truly matches what was procured. During assembly, these identities can be cross-checked against approved vendor lists or certificate authorities that validate authenticity. If any mismatch arises, organizations can quarantine suspect components for deeper investigation. This identity-centric approach deters supply-chain attacks where an adversary attempts to substitute bogus parts, thus reinforcing overall spacecraft reliability and reducing the chance of critical mission disruption.
