Space Segment Guidance

“Track and trace” extends identity-based provenance by documenting the entire lifecycle of components—from raw materials or development repositories to final integration in a spacecraft. Mechanisms might include shipping manifests, tamper-evident seals, and digital ledgers updated at each custodial handoff. In software, version-tracking tools and code-signing logs can confirm that modules remain unaltered across code merges, vendor updates, or production releases. This chain-of-custody data helps investigators quickly pinpoint any stage where a suspicious substitution or modification might have occurred. Additionally, having a clear track-and-trace record supports faster recalls and mitigations—if a defect is discovered or a security vulnerability is flagged post-launch, the mission operator can reference detailed provenance logs to isolate at-risk items and respond more effectively.
